Fall is when I start reaching for jeans more often. Cooler weather brings out sweaters, jackets and boots, and denim becomes one of the easiest foundations for those outfits.
But if you’re petite, finding jeans that hit in the right place can take a little more attention. For this roundup, I looked at inseam, rise, size availability and fit, with particular attention to the measurements that can make a difference on a shorter frame. Before you choose a pair, you may also want to check my Petite Sizing Guide for tips on measuring yourself and understanding inseams and rise measurements.
One of the jeans below is a pair I actually own and wear, so I’ve included my personal fit notes. The rest are options I selected because they give us a useful mix of lengths, fits, retailers and price points.

Why the Inseam Matters
For petite women, the inseam is one of the most useful numbers to check before ordering jeans. A 25-inch inseam, 27-inch inseam and 29-inch inseam can all have a place in a petite wardrobe—it depends on the jean, where you want the hem to fall and the shoes you’ll wear.
A shorter inseam may be just right with sneakers or flats. A longer inseam may be what you want with ankle boots or a shoe with some height. With wide-leg and flare jeans, extra length can be especially useful.
You’ll also see that some brands offer both Petite and Short sizing. In two of the Amazon picks below, the Short inseam is actually shorter than the Petite inseam. That’s exactly why I like looking at the actual measurement rather than relying only on the label.
A Note About Prices
For the non-Amazon picks, I use a simple price icon based on the regular/list price in our research: $ = under $50, $$ = $50–$99, $$$ = $100–$149, and $$$$ = $150+. Temporary sale prices are not used to set the icon, because sales and markdowns change.
I do not show a price or price icon for the Amazon picks. Amazon’s Associates policies say product prices and availability may only be displayed when Amazon serves that information through the link or when the associate obtains it through the approved API and follows the related requirements. We are keeping the Amazon recommendations price-free rather than manually assigning a price tier.
Prices, promotions, shipping terms and availability can change, so check the retailer’s current information before ordering.

10 Petite Jeans to Consider for Fall
1. Pure Jill Bi-Stretch Denim 5-Pocket Jean
$$ | Petite XSP–XLP | 26.5″ petite inseam | Mid rise | Pull-on
This is my J.Jill pick for a more traditional-looking jean, but the feel is closer to a soft legging. The five-pocket pull-on jean has some stretch from its cotton, recycled polyester and spandex blend.
My fit note: I bought this one size smaller than I normally wear, and that gave me the best fit. They have some stretch, and the pull-on style makes them easy to wear. Mine hit right on top of the foot, just below the ankle.
Shipping & returns: J.Jill’s current policy allows eligible returns within 60 days. Store returns are free; the prepaid USPS mail return has an $8.95 processing fee.
2. Talbots Slim Ankle Jean — Standard & Curvy Fit
$$ | Petite 0–16 | Petite Plus 14–22 | 26.5″ petite inseam | Mid rise
The standard fit and Curvy Fit give you two ways to shop the same basic slim-ankle look. The Curvy Fit is designed for a waist that is proportionally smaller than the hips. The Kimbrough Wash is a dark blue denim with a fly front and five-pocket design. The fabric is 68% cotton, 21% polyester, 9% rayon and 2% Lycra® Spandex, giving the jeans some stretch.
Both versions have a 26.5-inch petite inseam and a mid rise. If you often find that jeans fit your hips but leave extra room at the waist, the Curvy Fit is worth checking.
Shipping & returns: Talbots currently lists a 30-day return window for newer purchases, with a $9.95 fee when using its prepaid return label. Store returns are available. Standard shipping charges and promotions can vary.
3. NYDJ Casey Stovepipe Ankle Jeans on Amazon
Petite 0–16 | 26″ inseam | Mid rise
This five-pocket, zipper-front jean comes in Mist Springs, a lighter blue, and Morningtides, a very dark blue. The cotton-rich fabric includes Lycra® elastane for some stretch. NYDJ also uses Lift Tuck Technology, designed to flatten the front and flatter curves in the back.
NYDJ’s Lift Tuck Technology is designed to flatten in the front and flatter curves in the back.
Shipping & returns: Amazon terms can vary by listing and seller, so check the specific product page for the current delivery and return eligibility.
4. Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda Classic High-Rise Taper Jean on Amazon
Petite 4–18 | Petite Short 4–18 | 29″ Petite / 27″ Petite Short | High rise
This pair gives us one of the most useful reminders in the roundup: don’t assume the size label tells you the length you need. It comes in several colors, including multiple blue options, white and the dark Coffee Roast.
The listing shows a 29-inch inseam for Petite and 27 inches for Petite Short. In other words, the Short version is actually two inches shorter than the version labeled Petite. If 29 inches is longer than you want, check the Petite Short option. The five-pocket, zipper-front jean is made from a cotton-rich blend with 2% spandex, so it has some stretch.
Fit note: The listing notes that this style is frequently returned because of a tight fit, so I would pay close attention to the size chart before ordering.
Shipping & returns: Check the Amazon listing for the current seller, delivery terms and return eligibility.
5. Lee Women’s Petite Ultra Luxe Comfort Bootcut Jean on Amazon
Petite 2–18 | Short 2–18 | 29″ Petite / 27″ Short | Mid rise
If you want a traditional bootcut, this Lee pair gives you two petite-friendly length options. It comes in dark and medium blue denim, with a cotton-rich blend that includes 2% spandex for some stretch.
Like the Amanda jeans, the Petite inseam is listed at 29 inches while the Short version is 27 inches. That makes the Short option worth checking if you want a shorter hem. Because this is a bootcut, think about the boots or shoes you plan to wear before choosing the length.
Shipping & returns: Amazon terms can vary by listing and seller; check the product page before ordering.
6. Old Navy Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans
$ | Petite 0–18 | 29″ petite inseam | Extra high waist
If you want to try a wide-leg jean, I like having this one in the mix. Petite women can absolutely wear a wider leg, and the longer 29-inch petite inseam can be useful if you want to wear the jeans with boots or a shoe with some height.
Old Navy offers several colors and washes, including several blues, black, brown and dark forest green. The five-pocket, zipper-front style has low stretch, and I like the way the front pockets give a little tummy control.
Shipping & returns: Old Navy’s current shipping varies by Rewards status and order total; qualifying Rewards orders of $50 or more receive free basic shipping. Returns are free by mail or in store, except final-sale items.
7. Universal Thread Mid-Rise Boyfriend Jeans at Target
$ | Short 00–16 | 25″ inseam | Mid rise
These aren’t labeled Petite. They’re offered in a Short size range, and that’s exactly why I wanted them here. Petite shoppers can find useful options in Short sizing, too.
The 25-inch Short inseam makes these one of the shortest options in the roundup. They’re a relaxed boyfriend fit in 100% cotton with little to no stretch and a five-pocket, fly-button design. Color choices include burgundy, gray, light blue and medium blue.
Shipping & returns: Target currently offers free shipping on orders of $35 or more, and Universal Thread is a Target-owned brand, which means eligible items can be returned for up to one year with a receipt.
8. Petite Studio NYC Asher Mid-Rise Flared Jeans
$$$$ | XXS–XXL (petite-only sizing) | 28.3″ inseam | 10.2″ mid rise
Petite Studio NYC designs its entire line specifically for petite proportions, rather than adding petite sizes to a regular collection. The Asher is our true flare option, with a slim fit through the thigh and a mid rise. The Vintage Blue wash is a medium blue, and the 99% cotton, 1% spandex denim has plenty of stretch.
At 28.3 inches, the inseam is longer than several of the jeans in this roundup. That can make sense if you’re planning to wear a flare with boots or a shoe with some height.
Shipping & returns: Petite Studio offers free U.S. shipping on orders over $150, free exchanges, and an $8 return fee. U.S. returns are accepted within 20 days of purchase or 14 days after delivery, whichever is longer.
9. Talbots Jeggings — Standard & Curvy Fit
$$ | Petite 0–16 |Petite Plus 14 -22 | 26.5″ inseam | High waist
The Curvy Fit gives you another fit option if you prefer a closer skinny-leg silhouette. The Essex Wash is a medium-to-dark blue denim with a traditional five-pocket, fly-front design, and the cotton-rich fabric includes 1% spandex for some stretch.
Both versions have a 26.5-inch inseam and a high waist. The standard version is available in Petite Plus, while the Curvy version currently tops out at Petite 0–16.
Shipping & returns: Talbots currently uses a 30-day return window for newer purchases, with a $9.95 fee for returns using its prepaid label. Store returns are available. Standard shipping charges and promotions can change.
10. Crown & Ivy Petite Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans at Belk
$$ | Petite 2P–14P | 26″ inseam | Mid rise
If you want a traditional skinny jean at a moderate price tier, this Belk option gives us another straightforward everyday choice. It comes in three blue washes, from light to dark, and the cotton, polyester and spandex blend gives the denim some flexibility.
The 26-inch inseam is short enough to be useful for petite shoppers who want a clean ankle area without a lot of extra fabric.
Shipping & returns: Belk’s current policy should be checked before ordering because shipping and return charges can vary by order. The research for this article found free shipping at higher order totals and a 30-day return window.

A Few Things I Would Check Before Ordering
Inseam — check the actual number and think about where you want the hem to fall.
Rise — when the retailer provides it, compare it with what you already know works for you.
Fit — if you regularly need more room through the hips, look for a Curvy Fit when one is available.
Shoes — decide whether you’ll wear the jeans with sneakers, flats, ankle boots or a shoe with some height.
Return policy — especially when you’re trying a new brand or deciding between two sizes.
The Bottom Line
I don’t think petite women need to limit themselves to one jean style. The better approach is to pay attention to the actual measurements, fit and proportions—and to think about how you plan to wear the jeans.
And don’t overlook Short sizing. The Amazon examples show why the word Petite on a product page doesn’t always tell the whole story. Check the inseam and choose the length that works for you.
